Sinn Féin TD for Kerry Martin Ferris has welcomed the appointment of a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Rheumatology at University Hospital Kerry after a campaign by the Kerry branch of Arthritis Ireland and others.
“It has been confirmed to me that a specialist nurse in rheumatology has been appointed at UHK. “This is a very welcome appointment and hopefully in will secure the long term future of rheumatology at the hospital,” said Deputy Ferris.
“In August 2016 I highlighted to both the Minister and the HSE the threatened departure of rheumatologist, Dr. Haroon who has been long asking for this position to support his vital work in dealing with the large number of patients from Kerry on his waiting list.
“I highlighted at the time his growing frustration and his need for this specialist decision. The local branch of Arthritis Ireland deserve a huge amount of credit for the campaign they ran locally to ensure that this position was filled.
“There are hundreds of people in this county who suffer from arthritis and other autoimmune diseases and this appointment should help alleviate the concerns of these patients and their families. “Enormous credit should also go to Dr. Haroon who has been working under very difficult circumstances to meet the demands of an ever growing waiting list,” Deputy Ferris concluded.
