Division 2 Men Pool 1 St. Mary’s B V KCYMS

The home team took the lead in the early part of this game at Castleisland Community Centre on Sunday afternoon.

A huge performances by KCYMS players, Brendan Eckles and Jamie Cooke – who had 10 and six point respectively for the quarter saw the visitors push ahead.

Good Scores from St. Mary’s

This was in spite of some good scores from St. Mary’s Marc O’Connor, Patrick Hickey and Chris Brosnan. The Killorglin side led 18 points to St. Mary’s 11 at the end of the first.

Killorglin had first possession but a Chris Brosnan rebound gave it back to the home team and Paudie Fleming sunk a three to reduce the gap to four points.

Despite some good shooting, St. Mary’s had trouble securing scores and midway through the quarter they trailed by nine points as Killorglin’s John Sheehan was on target hitting six points in the first four minutes of the quarter.

Tables Were Turned

Mid way through the tables were turned. A foul sent Paudie Fleming to the free throw line and he hit two from two and yet another having been fouled again.

John Sheehan hit back for the visitors registering his eight point for the quarter and his side’s first score in four minutes.

A Fleming rebound and fast break kept St. Mary’s in the game and the quarter finished 21 to 27 in favour of the visitors.

Killorglin’s Paul Sheehan opened the scoring in the third period of play. The home side had plenty of scoring opportunity in the early part but the ball just would not drop for them.

Then Padraig Brosnan netted the first score of the quarter for Mary’s. Killorglin now led by 10 points having had scores from John Sheehan and accurate free throwing from Jamie Cooke.

A Fast Break

A Marc O’Connor basket and a fast break by Paudie Fleming saw the home side reduce the gap to six points. Neither team scored for the next four minutes until, with just 1.42 on the clock, Fleming hit another three for St. Mary’s leaving just three points between the sides at the end of the third quarter.

Once again it was Paul Sheehan who registered the first score of the quarter. The home team turned over a lot of ball in the early part of the quarter and both sides found it difficult to score.

Just three points were scored in the first four minutes – all going to the visitors. Chris Brosnan made the first score of the final period for St. Mary’s and this came from the free throw line.

John Sheehan and Paudie Fleming exchanged baskets. The home team were rebounding well but not converting until, as the clock ran down, Patrick Hickey secured a score.

A Single Point

Hickey then went on to assist Tom McCarthy in another to see St. Mary’s trail by just a single point.

A score from Chris Brosnan saw the home team take the lead for the first time since the opening quarter.

The score-board read 39 points to 38 in favour of the host with 48 seconds remaining on the clock. A good series of passes set Killorglin player/coach, Niall Murphy up for the winning basket. Both sides had opportunities as the clock ran down but neither team converted. Final score: St. Mary’s 39 K.C.Y.M.S. 40
