Knocknagoshel 1-7 Ballyduff 1-8

Knocknagoshel and Ballyduff met in Willie Walsh Park, Knocknagoshel with both sides eager for a win after losing the previous week.

Knocknagoshel played into the strong breeze in the first half and it was Niall Barrett who got them off the mark with a point from a free in the fourth minute.

The home side failed to build on it as they found it difficult to pick out passes against the wind and Ballyduff kicked four points in a row two of which came from play by Eddie Joy and Jack O’Sullivan.

Long Range Frees

Full forward John Paul Leahy used the wind to good effect when kicking over two long range frees in the eleventh and twelfth minutes. David O’Donoghue reduced the deficit for Knocknagoshel with a point from play in the twentieth minute.

David Goulding was a constant threat for Ballyduff and kicked a sweet point from play in the twenty fifth minute. John Paul Leahy pointed a free three minutes later to leave the half time score 0-6 to 0-2 in favour of the visitors.

In the second half, Knocknagoshel opened the scoring with Niall Barrett kicking a point from play. Ballyduff cemented their lead when the ball fell to Chris White and he found the back of the net.

Upped Performance

The visitors extended their lead with a John Paul Leahy pointed free in the seventeenth minute. Knocknagoshel upped their performance from here to the end and Padraig Reidy pointed from play in the eighteenth minute.

Kieran Downey pointed a 45 and this was followed by another point from play by Padraig Reidy. Niall Barrett slotted a free a minute later to leave a goal separating the sides.

David Goulding scored a point from play for Ballyduff to extend their lead to four points with minutes remaining.

Knocknagoshel threw everything at Ballyduff as they went in search of a goal and when Michael Walsh was pulled down Niall Barrett rattled the roof of the net from the resulting free.

Too Little Too Late

It proved too little too late for Knocknagoshel as Ballyduff held on for a well deserved victory and their first brace of points in the county league.

The final score was: Knocknagoshel 1-7 Ballyduff 1-8.

Knocknagoshel’s next match is against the same opposition when they will travel to Ballyduff in the preliminary round of the junior championship.

This match will go ahead on Sunday, April 9th.
