The fifth annual Dromtrasna Challenge will take place on Saturday 20th October, starting at Dromtrasna National School, Abbeyfeale.

The event offers a unique opportunity to all members of the community to get involved through a 2K Children’s Run; a 4K Walk/Run and 10K Run. There is something for everyone in this year’s event.

After Party

It doesn’t end there. Having conquered the Dromtrasna Challenge, the after party will take place in The Winners’ Circle, Abbeyfeale at 10pm.

Entertainment will be provided by Pulse, a band that combines world-class musicianship with one of Ireland’s finest vocalists.

Miriam Joy Cancer Treatment Fund

All proceeds from this year’s event will go to the ‘Miriam Joy Cancer Treatment Fund’ setup by Miriam’s family.

Miriam is a 32 year old mom of two from Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick. She is married to Pat Fitzgerald from Castleisland where they live with their two boys Noah (10) and Joshua (5).

Miriam is a teacher at Dromtrasna National School.

May 2017 Diagnosis

In May 2017, Miriam’s world was rocked when she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. Her story since then has involved a range of treatments including two surgeries, along with multiple rounds of fortnightly and weekly chemotherapy.

Unfortunately, these treatments have not been successful and this extremely aggressive form of breast cancer has now spread to her brain and her lungs.

Staggeringly Expensive Treatment

The only option for Miriam is a change of direction with her treatment. Immunotherapy is a new treatment option that her oncologists have agreed is her best hope.

It is however very costly in this country. Sadly, right now the only way for Miriam to access it is by paying for it privately herself. This will cost a staggering €7,000 every three weeks for an indefinite length of time.

Gofundme Page

Just two weeks ago Miriam’s family in Abbeyfeale and her in-laws in Castleisland joined forces and issued an appeal through a ‘gofundme’ page.

The response has been overwhelming to date and the target of €120,000 had been almost doubled with donations still coming in.

Take the Challenge For Miriam

“Cancer has changed Miriam’s life drastically. It has had a devastating effect on this young couple and their family. We invite you to support Miriam and her family on Saturday 20th October by joining us at Dromtrasna Challenge 2018. It is sure to be a fantastic social occasion while we support a very deserving cause.

“We urge everyone to get involved and lets all TAKE THAT STEP FOR MIRIAM,” said a statement from the organisers.
