Team Tom McCarthy’s St. Mary’s Suffer Home Loss to Rockets

Team Tom McCarthy’s St. Mary’s suffered a home loss to Belfast side, Phoenix Rockets on Saturday evening. The Garvey’s SupeValu sponsored game was one which saw a huge turnaround as the quarters progressed.

The visitors had a huge start netting 23 points in the opening quarter 11 of these coming from American Amanda Fior av anti who was unstoppable throughout the game. Team Tom McCarthy’s gave it their all with Lorraine Scanlon and Mary Herlihy winning plenty under the boards but they trailed by 12 at the end of the first.

Similar Second Quarter

The second quarter was similar as again the home side found it impossible to contain Fioravanti who hit 19 points in this first half for Rockets.

St. Mary’s captain, Lorraine Scanlon hit 13 for the home side in the first two quarters. The score at the half time interval was 19 points to 45 in favour of the visitors.

A Huge Comeback

Team Tom McCarthy’s made a huge comeback in the third quarter mainly due to the efforts of Labhaoise Walmsley and Scanlon and the team performance was more intense than it had been in the first half.

St. Mary’s outscored their opponents by five in the third quarter and kept the momentum going in the final quarter.

Vital Scores

Vital scores came from Scanlon, Walmsley, Denise Dunlea and Sarah O’Sullivan, the home side took the quarter by eight but could not bridge the gap created by Phoenix Rockets in the first half.

Final score: Team Tom McCarthy’s 55 Phoenix Rockets 68.

Top Scorers: St. Mary’s: Lorraine Scanlon, 26; Labhaoise Walmsley, 8 and Sarah O’Sullivan, 6. Phoenix Rockets: Amanda Fioravanti, 31; Charley McGrath 16 and Amber Dean 13.

Team Tom McCarthys are away to Trinity Meteors next weekend. They tip off at Trinity Sports Centre in Dublin at 5.30pm.

American player, Mia Hopkins has just signed with Team Tom McCarthy / St. Mary’s.

American Mai to Join Team Tom McCarthy’s

St. Mary’s Basketball Club has just announced the signing of American Mia Hopkins to their national league ladies team, Team Tom McCarthy’s. St. Mary’s have just one win from five to date this season and will be hoping to turn that around from this coming weekend.

Hopkins, a 5’10” Combo Guard is from Pittston, Pennsylvania, USA

She graduated from West Chester University of Pennsylvania with BS Exercise Science.

She has played professional basketball for Ostrava in the Czech Republic and more recently played in the Basketball Ireland Super league with Marble City Hawks Kilkenny.

Basketball Highlights: Triple double in West Chester University; Won 18 games in a row with WCU; Carlow IT Pre-Season tournament MVP- Superleague; Played in the FIBA Mediterranean Cup in Toulouse, France; Posted 31 points 10 rebounds against Killester in SuperLeague earlier this season.
