Brosna Prepares for Daniel J.Hannon Folk Festival 2019

The late Daniel J. Hannon’s life and work will be celebrated in his native Brosna over the coming weekend.

A folk festival in memory of songwriter Daniel J.Hannon will be held in Brosna over the coming weekend.

Daniel Hannon, best known as the composer of the local anthem My Native Brosna Town was a renowned fundraiser for charitable causes from his base in the USA.

The festival weekend will feature a lively programme of music and cultural events.

Friday September 20th

Culture Night Event: ‘By the Old Wood Road’ will take place at the GAA meeting room at Pairc na Féile to celebrate Daniel J. Hannon’s writing and dedication to Irish Culture at 6pm.

Con Carey Cup

Con Carey Cup: Brosna GAA Club will take on their Cork neighbours Rockchapel GAA Club in a rare senior football match.

They will be playing for the Con Carey Cup. This trophy was donated by Daniel J.Hannon in 1988 and dedicated to the memory of local raconteur Con Carey. Match starts at 7pm sharp.

Saturday September 21st

Fun Run: A 4K fun run in memory of Daniel J.Hannon’s son John Hannon.

John Hannon was a member of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). He was an accomplished athlete and represented the FDNY Gaelic Football team.

Tragically John lost his life in a car accident in 1997 on his way home from work. John was an American Red Cross Volunteer and an organ donor.

Registration at 9am, Pairc na Féile, run starts at 10am.

Historical Talk: Tom Roche, local historian, will deliver a two part talk on Daniel J. Hannon and ‘1881: A Most Turbulent Year in the History of Brosna’. Three Counties Bar 2:30pm.

Rambling House with well-known Fear a’Tí, Tom Herlihy of Knockalougha, Knocknagoshel will be held at 8:15pm in Brosna Parish Hall. Spot Prizes on the night.

Sunday August 7th

GAA Blitz: Gaelic football takes centre stage again as Brosna host an U-8 and U-10 blitz.

Brosna, Knocknagoshel, Rockchapel and Mountcollins are all participating. The Blitz starts at 5:30pm. Face-painting for all children and medals for all players.

Memorial Unveiling: A memorial to Daniel J.Hannon will be unveiled at 7pm in the Square at Brosna.

Singing Session: A singing session will be held in Three Counties Bar with renowned singer and storyteller Frances Kennedy. 8:15pm.

Family members are returning from New York and Birmingham for what should be a very enjoyable and memorable weekend.
