A Flair for Organising

Early in the winter of 2015 the late Renee McCarthy gathered a little group of like-minded people around her with the objective of organising a Christmas Craft Fair in Castleisland.

They chose the River Island Hotel as the venue and got the word out to the press and sledged notice boards into the grass margins on all approach roads to the town.

Organising that kind of event and day takes patience and tenacity and Renee took it much further.

Atmosphere in the Building

Knowing, more than hoping, that she and her group were doing something that would draw a crowd to town on the appointed Saturday, Renee approached River Island Hotel manager Willie Buckley and asked if it would be possible to do a lunch special in the hotel for the visitors to the day-long event.

That too was a huge success and it added greatly to the atmosphere created by the fair which involved all ages from this and neighbouring parishes.

Charities Benefited

Stall holders were invited to submit details of their offerings and the widest range of goods and prices were chosen so that everyone there would find something to suit their budgets and tastes.

Renee chose Castleisland Day Care Centre and Recovery Haven, Tralee as the recipients of the proceeds of the day.

A Flair for Organising

Event organising was a flair she had and she also had the gift of bringing people along with her.

On returning to Castleisland a decade or so ago, Renee also joined and sang with the Castleisland Parish Choir up to recently.

Failing health, at a time when she should justifiably expect many more years, prevented her from getting involved in organising events to that extent anymore.

May God be good to her.
