Christmas Church Services in Castleisland, Cordal and Scartaglin

A Castleisland Parish Office issued poster to announce the return of Midnight Mass to the area.

The long established but relatively recently lapsed tradition of midnight mass in Castleisland on Christmas Eve is being revived by Fr. Mossie Brick PP.

The tradition was discontinued in Castleisland at least a couple of decades ago as disciples of the pub culture at the time frequently sang from different hymn sheets during the mass. Though it continued in Cordal up to recently.

The practice in the church was established around 400A.D. As it is believed the birth of Christ took place at midnight between December 24th and 25th – according to Fr. Brick.

“As Castleisland is such an accessible place and as there is no other midnight mass in the area, we thought we’d re-establish the tradition here this year,” said Fr. Brick.
