Student Grants Based on 2019 Income Levels without Covid-19 Considerations

Sinn Féin Kerry TD Deputy Pa Daly wrote to Education Minister Joe McHugh on the student grant payments.

The Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) grants application process opened last week without recognition that many families have had income reduced due to COVID 19.

According to Kerry Sinn Féin TD, Pa Daly, the assessment is based on 2019 income and no provision has been made for the changed reality facing so many students and families.

Change of Circumstances

“While the department refers to the ‘change of circumstances’ provision, this only applies where a change is ‘permanent or for the foreseeable future’ – said Deputy Daly.

“This does not seem to allow for people who are unemployed now, and who do not know if their employment will reopen or not.

Letter to Minister McHugh

“There is growing concern among students and their families in Kerry and I have written to Minister for Education Joe McHugh this week.

“We need clarity and honesty for students and their families. Students have enough pressure and uncertainty without this further stress.

“I have asked Minister McHugh to amend the criteria and establish special arrangements for students,” said Deputy Daly.
