The task of putting names to the faces in school photographs is usually fairly straight forward as most of those included will always remember the friends they made at the time.
Betty Walsh sent me this photograph from the early days of Castleisland Boys National School or Naomh Chárthaigh or ‘The Masters’ as it is more widely known locally.
This is in the hope that our readers would come up trumps again.
Betty’s brother Thomas Doody is included in the photograph and he’s third from the right on the back row.
List of Names
I think that’s Ted O’Connor who’s unfortunately partly hidden on the left of the front row. I’ve a feeling that Michael Brosnan, College Road is there as is Jerry Broderick, Moss O’Sullivan, Jimmy O’Mahony, Andrew Kelliher, Pa O’Connell, Dermot Long, Willie WH O’Connor, Liam O’Connor, Michael Biggane, Michael Shanahan, Eamon O’Callaghan and Con Browne.
Can anyone out there complete the list of names row by row from left to right.
Opened in 1961
The boys are accompanied by teacher and headmaster at the time, Paddy Brosnan and the photograph would have been taken in the early 1960s.
Castleisland Boy’s National School was built in the early 1960s and officially opened and blessed in June 1961.
It was away out in the countryside at the time and surrounded by green fields and this could well be one of the first class photographs taken there.
