The people in the general Castleisland area and their seasonal guests have made an endearing and special habit of meeting up and helping local and global charities over a couple of special hours on Christmas morning.
The Goal Mile has provided the ideal platform to continue the expressions of goodwill beyond the gift swapping of the morning.
At An Ríocht Athletic Club each Christmas morning since 1999 the Christmas Morning Goal Mile has been an ever-growing presence where people met and walked the mile and donated to the chosen charity of the time.
Trouble Spots of the World
The charities are usually chosen from one of the trouble spots of the world at the given day alongside a couple of local causes in need of funding at that particular time.
This Christmas morning 2021 the walk has been pared down to just that. For reasons well known to all by now, people are still invited and welcome to take part, as it is an outdoor, on track event, but the Pats Broderick element of the day has had to be shelved due to the continuing health concerns imposed by the pandemic.
Orphaned Children of Afghanistan
This year’s charity donation recipients will be the Orphaned Children of Afghanistan and a local charity yet to be decided.
Goal Mile founder and staunch promoter, Denis Brosnan asked to have the event mentioned here as usual.
He reminded potential donors / walkers that the airy, wide-open spaces around An Ríocht Athletic Club is where the action will take place with no interaction at all with the indoors this year.
Track Open from 10:30am to 12:30pm
And the timing is equally well spaced out as the track will be open from 10:30am to 12:30pm.
If you have family and friends around you this Christmas or if you find yourself on your own, the annual Christmas Morning Goal Mile is a great way of getting the day off to a healthy start for mind and body.
Here’s wishing all a Happy and Healthy Christmas.
