‘Tom Joe is Irreplaceable’ – Denny McSweeney

Tom Joe O’Donoghue was a frequent and always welcome presence at An Riocht Athletic Club in Castleisland down through the years.

Former An Riocht athlete and later manager, Denny McSweeney, when asked to sum up Tom Joe’s contribution to the sport, said he was a mighty man who was involved in all aspects of athletics whether it was cross country or track.

“He did so much for the sport and the best way I could describe his level of involvement is that he did for athletics in Castleisland and Kerry in general what Georgie O’Callaghan did for soccer.

“He had great time and a word for everyone whether you were an elite athlete or struggling to finish a race. Tom Joe O’Donoghue’s loss to athletics in Kerry is immeasurable. As for the levels of commitment he gave to the sport over so many years – he’s irreplaceable,” said Denny.
