In spite of written, voiced and physical objections to the proposals by the company known as Vantage Towers Ltd., Kerry County Council has passed the company’s planning application to erect a 24metre telecommunications pole / mast in Castleisland.

The mast is expected to be sited on the grounds of Castleisland Co-Op Mart in the south east corner of its expansive yard.

The parents’ association of Muire Gan Smál Primary School sought an urgent meeting with the board of Castleisland Co-Op Livestock Mart early last December to discuss its decision to agree to the siting of the mast on its grounds.

Overlooking School Grounds

It will, the school representatives argued, be overlooking the school grounds and the school’s junior infants’ playtime yard in particular.

Amicable and all as the meeting was, the mart representatives stuck to the plan and pointed out that there were similar masts in several other locations through the area and within the confines of the town itself.

Disappointed at the News

As well as the primary school, sited in that particular area also are: Castleisland Day Care Centre and the Presentation Girls’ Secondary School as well as An Riocht Athletic Club grounds and Castleisland Rugby Club and grounds.

While disappointed at the news, a spokesperson for the ad-hoc anti-mast group said that the members of the group will now look at what their next step will be and proceed from there.
