Upper Main Street Traffic Lights Get Another Slap of a Car

The traffic lights on the island junction of Limerick Road and Upper Main Street got another slap of a car – a van actually – in the early hours of this morning.

This particular set of lights is the most cursed of all as they have been knocked out of commission at least half a dozen times since they were positioned there in the early 1990s.

Ned Lyons Made them Famous

They’re famous too for the fact that Cordal man Ned Lyons and his big white horse sailed through them on one of their first mornings of operations.

Ned was on one of his weekly trips to town for supplies and the lights happened to be red but he and his horse weren’t programmed for such trivialities.

They proceeded on through and a member of An Gárda Síochána stepped off the flags and addressed Ned.

Talk of a Roundabout

“Did you see the lights Ned” said the officer. “I did so then,” said Ned, “They’re nice faith,” he said and with the tug of the reins they were gone about their business.

What could you say to that?

From time to time there’s talk that a roundabout would do us fine at that junction and this is one of those times and maybe it’s time to test that notion now that Limerick Road doesn’t pour near the same volume of traffic that it did before the bypass came 12 years ago now.
