Huge Force of Gardai in Early Morning Lightening Raid on Castleisland Estate

An eye-witness image of members of the Garda Armed Response Unit pictured at An Caisleán Mór during this morning’s raid.

And now for something completely different.

The normal, early Wednesday morning routine at the 2003 / 04 built Castleisland estate An Caisleán Mór was abruptly altered this morning as a huge force of Gardaí in 12 squad cars backed up by dog handlers and an armed response unit locked the estate down for up to a couple of hours – according to residents.

One local resident of the estate, an early riser, discovered that he was out of imported briquettes and he hopped on his bike and headed for supplies.

On his way back home he made another discovery when he was told, that the estate, which was initially occupied in November 2004, was being locked down temporarily and, according to residents, the Garda presence lingered there until close to 10am.

At least one house there was forcibly entered in the course of the lightening operation and Gardai are keeping their cards close for now as to the nature of the operation.

Locals also feel that this morning’s raid was a follow up on a visit by a Garda helicopter which circled and hovered over the area yesterday.
