The county final of the Kerry Student Enterprise Awards took place in MTU,Tralee on Tuesday of last week and 22 mini businesses were set up by participants.

Castleisland Community College students won both the junior and senior awards and also Duais na Gaeilge.

The students will now represent Kerry in the National Student Enterprise Awards final to be held in May, in Croke Park.

The senior category was won by Shauna O’Keeffe and David Peskett. They developed an app that allows students to communicate confidentially with teachers.

Communication with Teacher

It is particularly useful for an anxious, reserved student who is not inclined to communicate with their teacher during a lesson.

They have incorporated emoji images to enable non-English speaking students to communicate with their teacher.

The junior category was won by Clocha Cneasta which also won Duais na Gaeilge. The first year group comprised of Bláithín Rahilly, Laoise Mc Sweeney, Emma Horgan and Ellie Horgan. Clocha Cneasta originated in 2020 during the nationwide lock-down when school were closed.

Sending You Smiles

The students decided to paint on rocks that they had collected from beaches over the course of the summer.

The rocks contained positive messages, e.g. ‘Sending you smiles to brighten your day’. The girls placed the rocks outside their houses along the road for people to read.

“Walking outdoors became very popular with families at this time with the restrictions in place and the rocks were like an invisible hand touching people during these dark times,” Laura Leahy the business studies teacher and student enterprise co-ordinator.
