Following on from the Junior Cycle appeals process, the final number of seven Distinctions in Wood Technology have been awarded to Castleisland Community College Junior Cycle Wood Technology students of 2022.

The overall number of distinctions received by the 60 junior cycle students of 2022 stands at a staggering 28 and this is at higher level papers in Irish, English and maths and also common level exam subjects such as wood technology.

High Achieving Students

A distinction means that the student achieved over 90% in their exam.

The hard work and dedication of our high achieving woodwork students is a testament to their love of the subject which has snowballed in popularity in recent years in the school with 63 students choosing the optional subject in first year, 58 in second year and 44 in third year.

Past pupils have ventured into many disciplines e.g. medical and pharmaceutical, educational, business, agricultural and apprenticeships with the key hand eye coordination skills and creativity being honed.

Health and Safety Standards

Past investment in the room has brought it up to modern health and safety standards and with the most recent approval from the Department of Education and Science for a brand-new suite of hand and power tools, the quality of facilities is unrivalled. A brand-new laser cutter will also form part of the most recent investment to come with delivery of equipment due in September 2023.

The Department Inspector said that the most recent investment will bring the school into line with a brand-new school build.

“It will be the type of woodwork/ construction studies room that my 12-year-old self would have loved to have walked into!” said Aidan Joy, Wood Technology and Construction Studies teacher.
