This year’s National Heritage Week runs from August 12th to 20th and Tidy Towns groups in both Castleisland and Knocknagoshel will host similar and free events on Saturday, August 19th.

“Knocknagoshel Tidy Towns and Cathy Eastman of Biodiversity Partners will host a family friendly biodiversity walk and talk at 11am at Aggie’s Inch in Knockbrack, Knocknagoshel V92F9X8,” according to Shane McAuliffe who acts as spokesman for both groups.

Scavenger Hunt

The Knocknagoshel event will include a scavenger hunt, a nature walk, and, provided the water is low, a dip to assess the invertebrates in the river.

“The site is rich in biodiversity, being situated in the Lower River Shannon Special Area of Conservation and it is also fully wheelchair accessible,” he added.

In the afternoon, Ms. Eastman will be in Castleisland where, along with Castleisland Tidy Towns members, they will host another biodiversity walk and talk, this time along the town’s river walk starting at An Ríocht car park at 3pm.

River Maine Walk

“The walk will travel down along the bank of the River Maine to Killarney Road, where refreshments will be served nearby at The Forge Café.

Heritage Week will also include Wild Child Day, on August 19th to encourage children to look at the world around them differently, to open their eyes to the diverse beauty of the landscape in their area and to get out and explore their locality.

An Island Nation

Water Heritage Day on August 20th is held in partnership with the Local Authority Waters Programme.

“As an island nation, our history and our heritage have been shaped by the sea and the great Irish rivers, lakes and wetlands.

“Water Heritage Day celebrates water throughout Ireland, its history and heritage and our connections with it,” said Shane.
