The return of the Couch-to-5K programme at An Ríocht Athletic Club has had two very successful outings this week on Monday and Thursday nights and not in the most ideal weather conditions.

However, while there was rain at both sides of the main activity on both nights it remained dry for the crucial half-hours in between.

The organisers and several of the participants expressed their pleasure with Kerry County Council for the job the crew did on the road to and from the stadium in recent weeks.

Because the road is now busier that ever in the darkness of the winter evenings the users wonder why lighting can’t by supplied to go with the greatly appreciated road surface.

Five Lamp-Posts In Situ

The odd thing is that there are at least five, fully fitted lamp-posts on the right hand side of the road as you face down for An Ríocht.

They were working at one time a few years ago but seem to have fallen into disrepair.

However, that still means that all the necessary wiring and structures are there only for someone to say ‘let there be light for God’s sake’ or words to that effect.

Cllr. Charlie Farrelly has already raised the question with Kerry County Council and is waiting on a reply.

Tralee Park Run

All the training currently in progress on the track is going well with over two hundred people from a wide geographical trawl of the locality attending over the two nights.

And, for those who’d like to take part, there’s the promise of a social Saturday morning out at a ‘Park Run’ in Tralee next month.

The Tralee Park Runs are big, free, social events held on Saturday mornings at 9:30am. It takes place in Tralee Town Park, Denny Street.

Running and jogging and keeping fit in general have seen many changes – often referred to as fads – over the years.

A Saturday Morning Thing

The Park Run is the latest and most enduring of these as it started in the UK in the early 2000s. It now claims a worldwide following of over three million regular participants.

It’s a Saturday morning thing – it seems and it’s open to runners, joggers, walkers, saunterers and volunteers as taking part is the glue that binds.

Many of the Castleisland Couch-to-5K participants will get their first taste of the Park Run experience next month. By then they’ll have run, jogged or walked many miles – in their own sweet way and at their own pace.

Mondays at 7:15pm and Thursdays at 8:15pm at An Ríocht Athletic Club and school children are free.

Meanwhile the 50/50 Goes On

Meanwhile, the club’s 50/50 fundraising draw continues and at Friday’s gathering at Anne Mac’s Circle K a Causeway winner, Seán Harty collected his cheque for €1,012 from the draw which was made at The Crown on the previous Friday.

Seán was the first winner among the club supporters who, as a members’ draw contributor, transferred to the 50/50 draw.

Seán’s dad John dipped into the drum to reveal this week’s winner and he drew the envelope of Seán Eamon O’Donoghue, Cordal for a win of €550.
