Three Kerry Enterprise Awards for Castleisland Community College Students

The county finals of the Kerry Student Enterprise Awards took place in MTU, Tralee on Friday and students from Castleisland Community College brought three prestigious awards.

Ellie Horgan, Rachel Horgan and Bláithín Rahilly won the intermediate category and Duais na Gaeilge.

They were interviewed as Gaeilge to receive the Duais na Gaeilge Award. The three entrepreneurial Gaelgóirí are back to back award winners having won the Kerry Junior Category and Duais na Gaeilge as well last year.

Representing Kerry

They represented Kerry last year and came third nationally. This year they will also represent Kerry in the national finals in Mullingar in May.

Their product ‘Léine lufar’ are shirts with magnetic buttons that are quick and easy to open and close.

Upcoming and budding entrepreneurs- Pádraig Murpy and Michael Daly from first year were runners up in the Junior Category with their colour coded timetable key-rings ‘Clárama’.

Twenty-five mini businesses were set up by students.

Business Idea Development

The competition promotes business idea development, structure, sourcing of finance, marketing and sales and the presentation of a formal business plan.

Extensive work was done by the students and also their mentors – Laura Leahy, business studies teacher and student enterprise co-ordinator for the intermediate level and Áine Culloty, business studies and accounting teacher for the Junior Category.

“Castleisland Community College runs an extremely successful entrepreneurship programme that has won many county and national awards.

“We are immensely proud of our students and wish Léine Lufar the best of luck in the national finals,” said Principal Teresa Lonergan.
