Currow is on a major election footing as the community prepares to go to the polls in October.
However, on this occasion no votes will be cast for Michael D. Higgins or the other presidential hopefuls as locals begin the process of electing a new Mayor of the Parish.

This week the progressive Currow GAA Club announced details of the election and have enlisted the assistance of four extremely popular local candidates for the election on October 19th.
The fun event is aimed at raising much needed funds for the continuing development of the club.
Gaining Momentum
“The Mayor concept is gaining momentum and has already created great interest and excitement in the Parish. Votes cost just €5 each with the candidate deemed to have secured the most votes set to elected.
There will be a gala night in Currow Community Centre on October 19th where the votes will be counted amid all the colour and excitement of a General Election.
New Equipment Needed
“Money raised from the campaign will go towards the purchase of a new mower, pitch maintenance, club equipment and the day to day running of this very busy rural club,” said Currow G.A.A. chairman, Tom O’Callaghan.
Three members of the Currow senior football team, Shane O’Leary, Mike McCarthy and Jack Scanlon in addition to a representative of the ladies club, Louise Nelligan McCarthy will battle it out for top honours and the honour of becoming Mayor of Currow.
No. 1 in Currow
One man who is always number one in Currow is Shane O’Leary, the club goalkeeper for the past 14 years.
“This is a fun event and I am delighted to give something back to a great club that is at the heart of our community. I have always had No. 1 on my back so hopefully I can secure enough votes to help me become No. 1 again,” said Shane who works with Dairymaster in Causeway.
Louise is Slight Favourite
With the help of the Currow Ladies Board and Coiste na nOg, Louise Nelligan McCarthy is slight favourite to take the coveted title.
“It would be a great boost for the ladies in the club if we elected a female Mayor.
Hopefully everyone in the parish and surrounding areas will purchase a vote and be part of this fun event.”
The other two candidates, Mike McCarthy who is a teacher in Dublin and I.T. Tralee student Jack Scanlon are reminding the public they have a chance to win attractive cash prizes each time they cast a vote.
