Gardaí in Castleisland are questioning locals after a string of businesses in the town have been hit with a rash of fake €50 notes.
Warnings have been sent out to businesses and traders in the area to be aware of this latest outbreak of fake notes – a plague which has hit the area from time to time down through the years.
As with all centres of business at this time of year, trade is ramping up as we enter the final bend for Christmas and that too is when the fake money begins to appear. Killarney has also been hit by con-men with fake notes in recent days.
While the present focus is on the €50 notes, Gardai locally are warning traders to be on their guard in the light of this latest outbreak.
“We’re talking to a few locals about it alright. It’s strictly local and we have it pinned. This is usually something that comes in from outside. People passing through would often stop off and pass these dud notes and they’re gone before the traders realise the damage they’ve done – but this week’s outbreak is local – very local. We got an alert on Monday night – and we’re onto it,” said Sgt. John O’Mahony.
