Children in Need to Benefit from Programme for Government Committment

Healy Rae – welcomed the announcement from Minister Harris.

Kerry TD, Michael Healy Rae welcomed the announcement by Minister for Health Simon Harris, TD.,  that he has pledged to legislate to extend automatic medical cards to children who are entitled to a domiciliary care allowance.

Minister Harris stated in the Dail last night that 11,000 sick and severely disabled children will benefit from the commitment, which was part of the Programme for Government,  and that the children will not have to go through assessment or means test. He stated that children in receipt of Domiciliary Care will start to receive the Medical Cards in early 2017.

Michael Healy Rae in a recent Parliamentary Question to Minister Harris asked how many Medical Cards were applied for and granted in the past 18 months in Kerry.

Kerry People Applied for 19,628 Medical Cards in 2015

From January to December 2015, 19,628 applications were received by the department from people in Kerry and 16,887 of these were granted.

Since January this year, 5,504 applications have been received and 4,731 have been granted.
