Mission of Mercy

I will always remember Timmy Buckley and Mikey Conway for a Saturday morning in Sheila Prendiville’s Bar and Grocery in 2001.

A frequent enough part of this job is putting out feelers for people trying to trace families. I published an appeal in the Castleisland pages of The Kerryman in early 2001. After a while and much discussion it dawned on Mikey Conway who we were dealing with.

I got back to my enquirers in England and they were delighted with the news.

Travelled from Spain

On that Saturday morning in Sheila’s, Timmy and Mikey met a couple who had travelled from Spain on that very morning on a mission of mercy. John and Barbara Power met the two local men to glean some information about Barbara’s mother who had been Castleisland born and reared but living in London since her teens.

Her children had been put up for adoption shortly after they were born and Barbara was one of the children in question. Her sister had a terminal illness and her wish was that she would meet her mother before she died.

To Their Credit

After much research her wish was granted and both Mikey and Timmy, to their eternal credit, played a huge role in fulfilling the dying lady’s wish with the information and family background they provided over a few hours and pints in Sheila’s.

They both filled them in on the family and its links with Pound Road going back over many years. Mikey, with his incredible knowledge of London at the time, pinpointed where the mother might be found. And she was exactly where he said she’d be. Ms. Power’s sister died in August of that year.
