The second annual Dick Fitzgerald Memorial Golf Cup was launched in Leen’s Hotel in Abbeyfeale on Friday.

The competition will be held at Castleisland Golf Club from Thursday, August 24th to Sunday 27th from 7am to 4pm.

Mary Fitzgerald and her son, Richard cut short their attendance at the Galway Race Festival to be at the launch.

Castleisland Native

The family members were very happy with the response to last year’s competition and praised the Castleisland Members’ Golf Club for hosting the tournament in honour of Dick – who was a native of Castleisland and very well respected in the area.

Captain Jonathan Kelliher thanked the family and owners of the Woodlands House Hotel and Spa for their support and sponsorship of this competition.

The event provides a major financial boost to Castleisland Members’ Golf Club.

Praise for the Course

Friends of the Fitzgeralds, some former inter-county hurling greats from Limerick, Tipperary and Galway who supported the Dick Fitzgerald Cup last year were vocal in their praise for the Castleisland course and club-house experience.

Dick Fitzgerald was a very popular family man and, with his wife Mary, they built up the Woodlands House Hotel & Spa to the high standards and popular wedding venue it is today.

He never forgot his roots and always had a warm welcome for all Kerry Gaels and teams who called in on their travels up and down the country.

Different Format This Year

The format this year is different to last year’s. It’s a four person team, two singles and a fourball and the cost is €100 per team.

The prizes include a two night B&B for each team member on the winning team – and there is a prize for the best ladies team.

Your support is welcome. You don’t have to be a member of a golf club or society to play in the competition.
