Sinn Féin TD for Kerry, Pa Daly, has today welcomed the appointment of two new Commissioners to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC), Emily Logan and Hugh Hume.

Speaking on a motion to affirm their appointment, Deputy Daly also placed important facts related to the Kerry Babies case on the Dáil record.

The Kerry Gardai Case

Joanna and her lawyers have long maintained that the case should have been known as the Kerry Gardai case, as the scandal was a matter of abuse of power on the part of some Gardai,” said Teachta Daly.

The tribunal set up to investigate the case never explained what it was supposed to get to the bottom of, namely how different family members in different rooms of Tralee Garda station came up with the same statement. I clarified this matter in the plainest terms possible.

Dáil Record Accurate Reflection

Along with the judgement of the High Court in favour of Joanna now being appended to the tribunal report in the Oireachtas library, this means the Dáil record reflects accurately what occurred.

This conclusion should give extra impetus for the important task of policing reform to continue so this behaviour cannot occur again,” arsa an teachta.
