Acting on requests from parents and guardians of children who use the playground here in Castleisland, Cllr. Charlie Farrelly included a motion for consideration at Thursday’s virtual meeting of the Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District.

Cllr. Farrelly’s motion read as follows: “I am requesting that Kerry Co. Council carry out a deep clean of the entire playground and equipment in the Castleisland playground and that an upgrade of the playground equipment be carried and to include an ASD communication board which will benefit children with learning difficulties such as ASD.”

Result of the Motion

As a result of the motion the entire area of the playground and the equipment there will undergo the deep cleaning requested and the facility is to be fitted with the aforementioned communications board.

In its bid to become an Autism Friendly Town, Tralee Municipal District had a communication board installed in the playground at Tralee Town Park last January.

Council Managed Playgrounds

The board was the first of its kind in Kerry County Council managed playgrounds.

It is designed to assist those with disabilities to communicate in different ways by pointing to a picture on the board to better convey what they wish to do.

Making Life Easier

Castleisland and the surrounding parishes have families whose children will benefit from the addition of such a communications board and if it makes life easier for them – then that’s what we should be providing here,” said Cllr. Farrelly.

As for the deep cleansing of the play area and the furniture here, that’s just a matter of good practice in these times and it’s something that should be done on a regular basis anyway,” he concluded.
