Four Transition Year students from Castleisland Community College: David Peskett, Leah Voiglander, Chloe O’Sullivan and Shauna O’Keeffe designed an app ‘Bright Mind’ – under the guidance of teacher, Laura Leahy.

They won the regional section of the Foróige Entrepreneurship Competition and were presented with a trophy and they now go forward to represent Munster in the national final in May.

There are over 5,000 teams entered this year from secondary schools all over Ireland and Bright Mind has reached the final 10 in the competition.

A Superb Achievement

This is a superb achievement for these students as the competition is open to students from all year groups from first year to sixth year.

This app allows students to communicate in confidence with their teacher during a lesson.

For example, slow down, repeat, I understand, I don’t understand, I need help, I’m finished and I don’t want to read. The teacher will receive a notification on their device and they can create more button options and create class groups if desired. This app provides a voice for all students to engage in class.

One to Watch Award

Shauna O’Keeffe also won the award ‘One to Watch’ with her product Climate Rescuer.

Her product design is smart bins made from scrap metals that will have a sensor on them to detect if the item is being placed in the correct bin.

The bin will automatically open if the sensor detects it is at the correct one. Every packaging will have a barcode that the bin will detect and if, for example, a Tayto bag is placed in front of the sensor of the recycling bin, it will keep beeping and flashing red until it is moved away from the sensor.

The bin will flash green using L.E.Ds to show if something was placed in the correct bin.
